The general frame design of the long wheelbase (LWB) recumbent offers an opportunity to create an excellent and functional touring bicycle.
From the “get-go”, back in the mid-80’s, I decided to not use the rear pannier adapters provided for the Avatar in lieu of mounting a standard rear rack (Blackburn) and it has proved to be very rigid and dependable all these years.
The front pannier system went through a short trial and revision period, evolving to an design that has performed flawlessly for the past 25 years. Of course, it did require a quite elaborate mounting system as shown in the related link.
The other modifications involved allowance for water bottles, a “trip computer” (yes, I know I could use a smart phone!), extra storage boxes, mirrors, air pump, lights, etc.
